Would you own one?
I know the automatics were plagued with issues, but not quite bad enough to be recalled. Is the manual safe? reliable?

Cool Mark Webber photo for your time.

The manuals are pretty dang good. As you mentioned, the auto was absolutely terrible.

My father buys a new, manual (but diesel) Focus every two years. All totally reliable, but then none more than two years old.

The autos are plagued with problems, and yes, bad enough to be recalled. But the recall is entirely specific to the 6-speed automated manual dual clutch transmission used in the cars.

The recalls are related to: the computer software that controls gear shifting; the transmission seals, which leak; and the dry dual clutch, which is a piece of shit.

The manuals are outfitted with 5-speed transmissions. They’re not the same and are not plagued by the same issues.

It is a shame that they are so bad because it was a really good idea and makes the slushbox experience feel less terrible. But the implementation was totally dogshit in terms of reliability.

Outside of the trans issue, do people like the cars? I rented one for a week and liked it, but ownership.... Whatcha think?

I bought a 13 Focus manual brand new, put around 80 thousand miles on it in three years then traded it in on my current S40. I thought it was a great comuter car. I went through a set of tyres, front brakes and a ball joint, all which I concider normal wear and tear. It never left me stranded and never had a check engine light.

My mum has had a 2011 Focus 1.6 Diesel Estate for the last 4 years, and has been very happy with it. For the first three years she was doing around 25,000 miles a year, but has cut back now. Still, its a really nice car to drive the few times I’ve driven it, and touch wood not had any issues with it. Well specced as it was a Titanium, so lots of toys. Not sure if you have the same trim levels in the US, or if they are called the same thing, but thats the one below top of the range (which would be Titanium X in the UK).

I had a 2012 Focus Titanium with handling package (5door). I liked a lot about that car. The two things I hated: the brain dead DCT and my Ford touch. If this has neither of those things, it’s a good car, IMHO.

My wife daily’d a 2012 for 3 years. At the end of it’s run I avoided driving it because of the auto trans. Had it been a manual it might still be here and have been my car when she wanted a new one. Great car otherwise so go for it...manual only though. You don’t want to be saddled with the auto needing clutches and seals every 30k.

not only reliability but it was a jerky mess even when operating right. I think it took them until the 2016 models to dump that trans...they went to 100k warranty on the clutches/seals and TCM for the 12-15 models.

Friend daily drives a manual ‘12 Titanium hatch. Loves it and so do I. Fun little car, decent power, plenty of space for a small car. Go for it. The auto was the main problem with those cars. Manual is fine and the direct injected motor is very efficient. My friend gets mad if he averages less than 30mpg a tank.

I have a US 2012 manual Focus as a daily and I love it. Mine is a lowly SE with no special options other than the Ruby Red paint job (which a salesman said was a “tree hundred ninety fiiiiiiiiiiive doller opshin”). My brother had an EP3 Civic Si, which I drove a lot, and I think my Focus compares pretty well in performance.

My mom has a 2012 auto Focus. Don’t get an auto.
